Zale closed the distance. He curled his fingers through her dark hair and forced her to look at him. “What other lies have you told me?”
Her eyes widened and her lips parted.
His gaze settled over her mouth. He wondered if her lips tasted as bitter as her betrayal.
Meri raised her hand to his face. She hesitated, her fingers hovering a few millimeters from his jaw.
Zale resisted the urge to release her. For the first time, he could scent her emotions. Conflict peppered every fiber of the devious woman. Longing mixed with disgust, lust mixed with repulsion, trust mixed with misgiving. Love…and hate. “You do have feelings for me.”
“I don’t understand why you’re angry, or what’s happening. But I feel like I’ve known you my entire life.” Meri brushed her fingertips across his chin, as though she’d aimed for his lips but had either missed her mark or lost her nerve. “I think I’m falling in love with you.”
A wave of heat crested inside him, sending his dragon spiralling toward an unknown shore. One touch, sweet words, and the beautiful betrayer had him under her spell again. Zale’s dragon threw his head back and roared.
The Pisces dragon buried inside her answered his call.
Zale’s knees buckled, but she kept him upright.
“You’re mine.” He used her hair to pull and twist her head until her lips parted beneath his. Zale lowered his face and claimed her mouth. There was nothing soft or gentle in the exchange. No pretty words. No longing looks. No thought other than she belonged to him.
Meri made a sound deep in her throat, half moan, half-growl. She tensed, yet she pressed her chest to his. She pushed his shoulder with one hand, while the other pressed into his back.
Zale ran his tongue across the seam of her lips, but she refused him entry. He took her chin between his forefinger and thumb, pressing down until she opened to him. Once he’d penetrated her mouth, waves of heat swirled inside him.
Though Zale dominated the kiss, Meri fought to gain ground. She slid her tongue past his lips, once, twice, and retreated. He eased back to change position, but she refused to yield. The woman bit his lower lip until he moaned for mercy.
Zale scented the approaching dragons before someone knocked.
Meri pulled back, blinking several times as though waking.
“Not now!” Zale’s graveled voice filled the room.
